Senior Dog Grooming: How to Make Grooming Comfortable for Older Dogs

There is something rather special about an older dog.

The grey muzzle. The slightly slower walk. The ability to sleep through practically anything. The uncanny ability to know exactly when you're opening the biscuit cupboard, despite being completely deaf to you calling them five minutes earlier.

Our older dogs have earned their grey hairs.

But as dogs get older, their grooming needs can change too.

The dog who once bounded onto the grooming table without a second thought may eventually decide that jumping onto anything is entirely beneath them. They may become stiffer, less steady on their feet, more sensitive to noise and vibration or simply become tired more quickly.

And that's perfectly normal.

Older dogs aren't difficult. They're just older.

At Only Dogs, our approach to senior dog grooming is about adapting the grooming experience to the dog in front of us. We believe grooming should be comfortable, welfare-focused and as stress-free as possible, whether we're looking after a bouncy puppy or a distinguished old gentleman who has decided that standing up is optional.

Why does an older dog need different grooming?

As dogs age, their bodies naturally change.

Older dogs can experience reduced muscle strength, stiffness, reduced flexibility and changes in balance. They may find standing for long periods more tiring and may be less comfortable with being handled around certain areas of their body.

Their skin and coat can change too.

Some senior dogs develop thinner or more delicate skin, while others can struggle to keep themselves as well groomed as they once did. A coat that was previously easy to maintain can become more prone to tangling and matting.

Even something as simple as standing still for a dog groom can become considerably more tiring for an elderly dog.

This is why senior dog grooming isn't simply about doing exactly the same groom but taking a little longer.

It's about adapting the entire experience to suit an older body.

Why regular grooming is important for senior dogs

Keeping an older dog well groomed isn't just about making them look lovely.

Regular dog grooming for older dogs can help us identify changes that may otherwise go unnoticed.

During a groom, we're able to look closely at the skin, coat, ears, paws and nails. We can sometimes notice things such as unusual lumps or bumps, changes to the skin, sore areas, changes in coat condition or nails that are becoming difficult to maintain.

Of course, we're groomers rather than vets, and we won't diagnose medical conditions.

But we can spot changes and let you know when something doesn't look quite right, so you can discuss it with your veterinary team.

Keeping the coat maintained is important too.

Matted or heavily tangled coats can pull on the skin and become uncomfortable. Older dogs may also find it increasingly difficult to cope with a large, heavy coat, particularly during warmer weather.

For some senior dogs, a practical, easy-maintenance haircut can be considerably more comfortable than maintaining a complicated style.

And that's where our “No Shame, No Blame, No Pain” approach comes in.

If your elderly dog has become matted, neglected their coat or simply hasn't been able to tolerate brushing like they once did, we're not here to make you feel guilty.

We're here to help your dog.

Senior dog grooming should be about comfort, not vanity

We love a beautiful groom.

But when we're grooming an older dog, comfort always comes before cosmetic perfection.

Sometimes that means choosing a shorter haircut.

Sometimes it means taking more breaks.

Sometimes it means changing the way we position a dog.

And sometimes it means accepting that your previously immaculate show-dog haircut has officially entered its “I'm retired now, darling” phase.

That's okay.

A shorter, easier-to-maintain coat can mean:

  • Less brushing at home
  • Fewer painful tangles
  • Less weight from the coat
  • Easier hygiene
  • Less time standing during grooming
  • A more comfortable dog between appointments

The best haircut for an older dog isn't necessarily the fanciest one.

It's the one that allows them to be comfortable.

We've invested in our salon with older dogs in mind

At Only Dogs, we've deliberately invested in our grooming equipment to make grooming as accessible and comfortable as possible for dogs of all ages and abilities.

This is particularly important when grooming senior dogs, who may struggle with jumping, standing for long periods or coping with unnecessary noise and vibration.

Electric grooming tables

Our electric grooming tables can be lowered so dogs can step onto the table rather than having to jump.

Once they're safely on, we can raise the table to a comfortable working height for our groomers.

For an older dog with stiff or weaker joints, avoiding an unnecessary jump can make a real difference.

And frankly, if you've ever watched an elderly Labrador contemplate a jump and then change his mind halfway through, you'll understand why we think this is a good idea.

Electric rise-and-lower bathing equipment

Bathing can present its own challenges for senior dogs.

Our electric rise-and-lower baths allow us to adjust the bathing area to make getting in and out easier.

We also have built-in static baths that allow dogs to step in and out, rather than requiring them to be lifted or encouraged to climb over a high edge.

This means we can choose the bathing method that best suits the individual dog.

Whether we're grooming a small senior dog or a 90kg elderly Mastiff, having different bathing options allows us to work with their physical abilities rather than against them.

Slower, quieter, lower-vibration clippers

Some older dogs become more sensitive to noise and vibration.

That's why we've invested in clippers that operate at a slower speed with lower vibration.

A quieter, gentler clipping experience can be particularly beneficial for dogs who have become less tolerant of the sensation of grooming as they've aged.

There's no reason to make an already unfamiliar sensation more intense than it needs to be.

Belly bands for additional support

One of the most useful pieces of equipment for elderly dog grooming is something deceptively simple: a belly band.

Older dogs can become tired when standing on the grooming table, particularly when their hind limbs aren't as strong or stable as they once were.

A belly band can provide additional support, helping the dog remain standing while reducing some of the strain placed on their hind legs.

It isn't about forcing a dog to stand.

It's about supporting them when they need a little help.

What can you do to help your older dog at home?

Good senior dog grooming doesn't start and finish at the grooming salon.

There are lots of things you can do at home to make life easier for an ageing dog.

Keep brushing gentle and regular

Older skin can be more delicate, so brushing needs to be gentle.

Short, regular brushing sessions are often much easier for an elderly dog than one long session where everyone eventually loses the will to live.

If your dog tells you they've had enough, listen.

Keep their nails maintained

Long nails can affect the way a dog stands and walks.

For an older dog who may already have reduced stability, keeping nails at a comfortable length is particularly important.

Don't wait until the coat becomes severely matted

This is especially important with senior dogs.

If brushing has become difficult, speak to your groomer sooner rather than later. A professional groomer can help you establish a manageable grooming routine that works for both you and your dog.

And if the coat has already become matted?

Don't panic.

Please don't be embarrassed and don't put off booking because you're worried about being told off.

At Only Dogs, there is genuinely No Shame, No Blame, No Pain.

Our priority is getting your dog comfortable.

Tell your groomer what you've noticed

You know your dog better than anyone.

If they've started struggling to stand, don't like being touched in a particular area, are slower getting up or seem less comfortable than they used to be, tell us before their groom.

Those little pieces of information help us adapt the groom.

A shorter groom can be a kinder groom

One of the most useful things we can do for an older dog is sometimes to rethink their haircut.

A shorter, practical trim can make life much easier for a senior dog.

It can reduce matting, make toileting and hygiene easier and reduce the amount of brushing required at home.

It can also reduce the length of the grooming appointment.

And that's important.

An elderly dog doesn't necessarily need to stand on a grooming table for hours simply because that's how they've always been groomed.

We can adapt.

We can take breaks.

We can change the grooming plan.

We can work with their limitations.

Because the dog who has spent twelve years giving you their very best deserves a little understanding when their legs aren't quite as enthusiastic as they used to be.

Experienced, welfare-focused grooming for senior dogs in Lingfield

At Only Dogs in Lingfield, Surrey, our approach to grooming is built around the individual dog.

We're an award-winning dog grooming salon specialising in stress-free grooming, nervous dogs and dogs who can be challenging to groom elsewhere. We're also owned and run by a qualified groomer and qualified canine behaviourist, meaning behaviour, welfare and communication are central to the way we work.

Our purpose-built salon has multiple bathing options, including floor-entry and electric bathing equipment, allowing us to accommodate dogs of different sizes and physical abilities.

We're also Canine First Aid trained, giving us additional knowledge and preparedness when caring for the dogs entrusted to us.

But equipment is only part of it.

The most important thing is understanding that every dog is an individual.

Your twelve-year-old Labrador doesn't necessarily need the same grooming experience as your two-year-old Cockapoo.

And that's exactly how it should be.

Your old dog deserves a little extra TLC

Getting older doesn't mean your dog has to stop enjoying their grooming appointments.

It might just mean we need to do things a little differently.

Less jumping.

Less strain.

Less noise.

Less rushing.

More support.

More patience.

More understanding.

And perhaps a little more time spent appreciating the magnificent old soul standing in front of us.

Because those grey faces, slightly wobbly legs and increasingly selective hearing are all signs of something rather wonderful:

They've been doing life with you for a long time.

And we think they've earned the gentlest groom possible. ❤️🐾
